Do You Remember It or Weren’t You There?
Gallery West, London. 30 January -3 March 2013
This exhibition brings together a diverse range of responsive multidisciplinary
works from seventeen invited artists with a shared experience of having witnessed one of Philip Lee and Cally Trench’s collaborative performances. Through these displays the exhibition examined the role of the viewer whilst highlighting the challenges of preserving the presence, duration and location of performance art.
I was eager to not use photography for this show. I wanted to make a work using mud/clay from the bottom of the water where Philip has performed that inspires much of my work, and to explore the impact of the mud on the paper, to recreate the painting of his corporeal self though the reeds that I had plucked from the water. The resulting drawing has the memory of the mud and water, the drips of the rain on the paper, and the wind that ripped some of the drenched membrane during my performance of drawing with the reeds.
